Charity Football Pool Week #6 Update – WE HAVE A WINNER!

Austin Hardware’s 3rd Annual Charity Football Pool presented by Trim-Lok

Week #6 Update

Congratulations to Nancy Jusseaume on navigating the roughest 6 weeks of picking football winners in recent memory, and winning our 3rd Annual Charity Football Pool presented by Trim-Lok.

Nancy’s victory came courtesy of the Washington Redskins 26-24 win over the San Francisco 49ers, along with upset home losses by both the Atlanta Falcons and Baltimore Ravens.

The title did not come without a little bit of angst for Nancy, however. While the Falcons, 12-point favorites, were busy blowing a 17-point halftime lead en route to falling 20-17 to the Miami Dolphins, and the Ravens (7-point favorites) were being given the boot by Chicago Bears kicker Connor Barth with 3:34 left in overtime, San Francisco was driving at the Washington 40 yard line with 28 seconds remaining, needing only another handful of yards for a legitimate shot at a game winning field goal themselves. But the Niners threw 3 consecutive incomplete passes, were penalized 10 yards for offensive pass interference, and ultimately were intercepted on a 4th down prayer by QB C.J. Beathard, preserving the win for the Redskins and for Nancy.

Nancy will be contacted to decide which of the listed charities she would like to benefit from her victory, and we’ll post that decision in this space in the coming weeks.

The season obviously ran much shorter than we would have hoped due to a number of substantial upsets each week. We do hope everyone who participated enjoyed themselves while it lasted, and look forward to hosting you again next season.

So, for one final time this season …

Charity Football Pool Week #5 Update

Austin Hardware’s 3rd Annual Charity Football Pool presented by Trim-Lok

Week #5 Update

It was no surprise in Week #5 that the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania would garner the attention of most of our pool players with the Steelers and Eagles both playing at home and kicking off as 9 and 7 point favorites respectively.

On the eastern side of the state the Eagles jumped out to a 21-0 first quarter lead against the Arizona Cardinals and cruised to a 34-7 victory, advancing 2 of our final 7 players on to Week #6. But what played out a 5 hour and 310 mile drive across the state was shocking and devastating to 4 of our players. Ben Roethlisberger threw a career-high 5 interceptions, 2 of which were returned for touchdowns, and the Steelers were booed off the field by their own fans (…wait…I thought that only happened in Philly????) in a 30-9 beat-down by the visiting Jacksonville Jaguars.

One other player advanced on Thursday night when New England held on to beat Tampa Bay 19-14 thanks mostly to 3 missed field goals by Tampa Bay kicker Nick Folk.

Week #5 by the numbers:
7 players entered Week #5
4 eliminated
3 advance to Week #6

Continued good luck to our final 3 competitors.

Charity Football Pool Week #4 Update

Austin Hardware’s 3rd Annual Charity Football Pool presented by Trim-Lok

Week #4 Update

A second consecutive wild week saw overtime, upsets, and walk-offs rule the day. In Week #4 our players made picks on 7 different teams. Among those, 3 fell victim to straight-up upsets and 2 took players to the wire before ultimately pulling out a victory.

In the game of the day 3 players lost their spot in the pool when the upstart Los Angeles Rams improved their record to 3-1 by defeating the touchdown-favorite Dallas Cowboys, 35-30 down in Jerry World. In another upset the Buffalo Bills, kicking off as 8 point underdogs, brought their hard-nosed defense on the road and downed the defending NFC champion Atlanta Falcons, 23-17, knocking out 2 players in the process. Finally, another 2 players saw their pool seasons end when the New York Jets won their second game in a row by upsetting the Jacksonville Jaguars, 23-20, courtesy of a 41-yard field goal by Chandler Cantanzaro with only 28 seconds remaining in overtime.

On the positive side, 2 of our players had to hold their breath to the bitter end, but advanced to Week #5 when Carson Palmer of the Arizona Cardinals connected with the great Larry Fitzgerald for a 24-yard touchdown pass with only :32 left on the OT clock, allowing the Cards to narrowly escape an upset by the division rival San Francisco 49ers. Other players advanced thanks to victories by the Seattle Seahawks, Cincinnati Bengals, and Kansas City Chiefs (who also narrowly avoided being upset by the pesky Washington Redskins late Monday night).

Week #4 by the numbers:
15 players entered Week #4
8 eliminated
7 advance to Week #5

Best of luck to all who remain and have a great week!

Charity Football Pool Week #3 Update

Austin Hardware’s 3rd Annual Charity Football Pool presented by Trim-Lok

Week #3 Update

Upsets, near upsets, record setting performances, last second victories, and would-be last second victories getting overturned all contributed to a heart-pounding Week #3.

The Packers and Patriots, 9 and 14 point home favorites respectively, who combined for 55% of our players picks this week, both scored TD’s with about 20 seconds remaining in regulation to avoid being upset (the Pack ultimately needed OT to knock off the still winless Bengals). Also, the Falcons escaped Detroit with a victory when what looked like a go-ahead TD pass from Matthew Stafford to Golden Tate with 8 seconds remaining was reversed upon replay review. To add insult to injury for the Lions, those final 8 seconds were run off the clock without another play being run thanks to one of the league’s quirkier rules.

On the downside for our players 4 were eliminated when the Chicago Bears earned their first win of the season by upsetting the Pittsburgh Steelers in overtime. Another 2 players saw their season end when the Saints went into Charlotte and battered the Panthers, while 1 player each was eliminated thanks to upset losses by Baltimore and Miami.

Week #3 by the numbers:
24 players entered Week #3
9 eliminated
15 advance to Week #4

Good luck to everyone who remains. Have a great week!

Charity Football Pool Week #2 Update

Austin Hardware’s 3rd Annual Charity Football Pool presented by Trim-Lok

Week #2 Update

There were no major upsets to rattle the pool this week. Over 50% of our players rode the Oakland Raiders, 14 point home favorites over the New York Jets, safely into Week #3. The Seahawks, also 14 point home favorites, needed a 4th quarter TD from Russell Wilson to Paul Richardson to defeat division rival San Francisco 12-9, and save nearly 20% of our players. Other players advanced thanks to victories by Baltimore, Arizona, and Carolina. The only 2 players who were eliminated simply failed to make a pick.

Week #2 by the numbers:
26 players entered Week #2
2 eliminated
24 advance to Week #3

Good luck to everyone who has advanced, and have a great week.

Charity Football Pool Welcome / Week #1 Update

All of us at Austin Hardware, along with our sponsor, Trim-Lok, would like to welcome you to the 3rd Annual Austin Hardware Charity Football Pool. We thank you for playing and hope you have a lot of fun with it this football season.

I have just a few notes to pass along before I get to the Week #1 update.

Pick Deadlines: ALL picks must be submitted before kickoff of the 1 PM E.T. games each Sunday. That includes games played late Sunday afternoon, Sunday night, and Monday night. Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday morning (i.e. played in London) games must be picked before they kickoff.

Website Trouble: If you ever have a problem logging in that can’t be resolved by clicking the “Having trouble logging in?” link, please don’t hesitate to e-mail me. If the weekly pick deadline is approaching just e-mail your pick to me. I will submit it and attempt to rectify the problem.

Week #1 Update
We had a pool-shaking upset right out of the gate in Week #1 when the Chiefs went into Foxboro and knocked off the Patriots on Thursday night. This marks only the third time the defending Super Bowl champion has lost the following season opener since the NFL began the tradition of scheduling the champ for the Thursday night league Kickoff game in 2004.

In another surprise the Jacksonville Jaguars went down to an emotion-filled NRG Stadium in Houston, and shocked the Texans in front of an opening day home crowd that undoubtedly needed something more to cheer about.

Week #1 by the numbers:
43 players entered the pool
17 eliminated
26 advance to Week #2

Good luck to all who remain and have a great week.

Maersk Impacted by Cyper Attack “Petya”

Our logistics partner, MIQ Logistics, has reported that on Tuesday, the ‘Petya’ ransomware cyberattack began hitting companies throughout Russia, Ukraine, France, Denmark and the U.S.   Initial reports indicated the attack disrupted more than 80 companies.  Infected computers displayed a message demanding a Bitcoin ransom. The cyberattack hit numerous companies ranging from food processors to crude oil producers to European government agencies as well as A.P. Moller-Maersk, the world’s largest shipping company.

Maersk reported via Twitter that the breakdown affects all company business units. The breakdown affected all business units at Maersk, including container shipping, port and tug boat operations, oil and gas production, drilling services, and oil tankers, the company said.

Maersk’s port operator APM Terminals was also hit, with Dutch broadcaster RTV Rijnmond reporting that 17 shipping container terminals run by APM Terminals had been hacked, including two in Rotterdam and 15 in other parts of the world.  Below is what we have been able to confirm so far:

  • APM Terminal – Elizabeth, NJ – Gate activities currently suspended.
  • APM Termainl – New York, NY – Gate activities currently suspended.
  • APM Terminal – Los Angeles, CA – The most recent report indicates that operations were halted this morning, remaining shut down until at least 5:00 p.m.

Charity Football Pool – WE HAVE A WINNER!

WEEK #17 – FINAL UPDATE

Congratulations to Scot Goddard for winning our 2nd Annual Charity Football Pool.

Scot made it through the final week of the regular season on the strength of Kansas City’s victory over the San Diego Chargers.

Our other finalist, Rich Roudebush (who also deserves congratulations for getting this far) was eliminated when, in probably the biggest surprise of Week #17, the New York Giants, with their playoff seed already locked in, and seemingly nothing to play for, went into D.C. and knocked off the rival Redskins who basically needed only a victory to claim a playoff spot of their own.

Scot has chosen for Austin and our great sponsors, TrimLok, Hettich America, and MIQ Logistics, to make a donation Make-A-Wish America in his name.

With that, this will be our final Charity Football Pool post for the season. We hope everyone had fun with it, and we look forward to having everyone back again next season.

Charity Football Pool – Week #16 Update

WEEK #16 UPDATE

After numerous consecutive weeks of favorites consistently pulling out victories, a number of underdogs finally broke through. In fact, Week #16 featured 7 point-spread underdogs coming up with straight-up victories. Heck, even the Cleveland Browns finally got their first win of the season!

In our pool BOTH remaining players fell victim. One went down, along with the playoff hopes of the Tennessee Titans, as they were steamrolled by the Jacksonville Jaguars, who just a week ago fired their head coach. Our other player lost when the struggling Arizona Cardinals went on the road and defeated the NFC West division champion Seattle Seahawks 34-31 on a field goal as time expired.

Because both players lost we are going to issue them a “mulligan” (a.k.a. a do-over), allowing them to keep going so we can see if a winner will emerge in Week #17.

Week #16 by the numbers:
2 players entered Week #16
2 eliminated
2 advance to Week #17 via mulligan
