Maersk Impacted by Cyper Attack “Petya”

Our logistics partner, MIQ Logistics, has reported that on Tuesday, the ‘Petya’ ransomware cyberattack began hitting companies throughout Russia, Ukraine, France, Denmark and the U.S.   Initial reports indicated the attack disrupted more than 80 companies.  Infected computers displayed a message demanding a Bitcoin ransom. The cyberattack hit numerous companies ranging from food processors to crude oil producers to European government agencies as well as A.P. Moller-Maersk, the world’s largest shipping company.

Maersk reported via Twitter that the breakdown affects all company business units. The breakdown affected all business units at Maersk, including container shipping, port and tug boat operations, oil and gas production, drilling services, and oil tankers, the company said.

Maersk’s port operator APM Terminals was also hit, with Dutch broadcaster RTV Rijnmond reporting that 17 shipping container terminals run by APM Terminals had been hacked, including two in Rotterdam and 15 in other parts of the world.  Below is what we have been able to confirm so far:

  • APM Terminal – Elizabeth, NJ – Gate activities currently suspended.
  • APM Termainl – New York, NY – Gate activities currently suspended.
  • APM Terminal – Los Angeles, CA – The most recent report indicates that operations were halted this morning, remaining shut down until at least 5:00 p.m.

Charity Football Pool – WE HAVE A WINNER!

WEEK #17 – FINAL UPDATE

Congratulations to Scot Goddard for winning our 2nd Annual Charity Football Pool.

Scot made it through the final week of the regular season on the strength of Kansas City’s victory over the San Diego Chargers.

Our other finalist, Rich Roudebush (who also deserves congratulations for getting this far) was eliminated when, in probably the biggest surprise of Week #17, the New York Giants, with their playoff seed already locked in, and seemingly nothing to play for, went into D.C. and knocked off the rival Redskins who basically needed only a victory to claim a playoff spot of their own.

Scot has chosen for Austin and our great sponsors, TrimLok, Hettich America, and MIQ Logistics, to make a donation Make-A-Wish America in his name.

With that, this will be our final Charity Football Pool post for the season. We hope everyone had fun with it, and we look forward to having everyone back again next season.

Charity Football Pool – Week #16 Update

WEEK #16 UPDATE

After numerous consecutive weeks of favorites consistently pulling out victories, a number of underdogs finally broke through. In fact, Week #16 featured 7 point-spread underdogs coming up with straight-up victories. Heck, even the Cleveland Browns finally got their first win of the season!

In our pool BOTH remaining players fell victim. One went down, along with the playoff hopes of the Tennessee Titans, as they were steamrolled by the Jacksonville Jaguars, who just a week ago fired their head coach. Our other player lost when the struggling Arizona Cardinals went on the road and defeated the NFC West division champion Seattle Seahawks 34-31 on a field goal as time expired.

Because both players lost we are going to issue them a “mulligan” (a.k.a. a do-over), allowing them to keep going so we can see if a winner will emerge in Week #17.

Week #16 by the numbers:
2 players entered Week #16
2 eliminated
2 advance to Week #17 via mulligan

Charity Football Pool – Week #15 Update

WEEK #15 UPDATE

The surprise of Week #15 had to be the Tennessee Titans’, 5.5 point underdogs, 19-17 defeat of the Kansas City Chiefs in sub-freezing temperatures at Arrowhead, on a 53-yard field goal by kicker Ryan Succop as time expired. After failing on a two-point conversion attempt following a touchdown with only 3:14 left in regulation, the Titans trailed the Chiefs 17-16. But Tennessee held K.C. to a 3-and-out and got the ball back with just over a minute to go. The Titans proceeded to drive just into range for Succop’s game winner, keeping them in a tie with Houston for the lead in the AFC South.

Meanwhile, 800 miles to the southeast, the only game that mattered to our final two players took place in the climate controlled environment of the Georgia Dome, where the Falcons dismantled the once-proud 49ers 41-13, dropping San Francisco to 1-13 for the season. Atlanta’s victory, coupled with Tampa Bay’s defeat, gives the Falcons a 1-game lead in the NFC South, and of course extends our pool to the penultimate week of the regular season.

Week #15 by the numbers:
2 players entered Week #15
0 eliminated
2 advance to Week #16

Charity Football Pool – Week #14 Update

WEEK #14 UPDATE

We’re slowly chipping away at the field and heading toward a winner in our 2nd annual charity football pool. In Week #14 one of our final 3 players lost their spot when the Houston Texans went into Indianapolis as 6.5 point underdogs to the Colts and came out with a 22-17 victory and first place in the AFC South.

Our final two players advanced on the backs of the Carolina Panthers, who easily handled the San Diego Chargers 28-16 at home, and the Detroit Lions who completed their 8th fourth-quarter comeback of the season (an NFL record) in their 20-17 victory over the Chicago Bears.

Charity Football Pool – Week #13 Update

WEEK #13 UPDATE

Week #13 saw one of our final 4 players eliminated in the most unusual, and heartbreaking ways possible. After trailing the Chiefs 27-16 in Atlanta, the Falcons roared back by scoring two 4th quarter TD’s to take a 28-27 lead with 4:53 to go. That’s when the unthinkable happened. On the 2-point conversion attempt following the Falcons go-ahead TD, Chiefs safety Eric Berry intercepted a Matt Ryan pass and returned it 99 yards giving KC the 2 points, and subsequently taking back the lead, 29-28. Kansas City received the ensuing kickoff and managed to run out the final 4+ minutes of the game to secure the victory.

Our other 3 players advanced to Week #14 when Super Bowl champion Denver upended the Jaguars in Jacksonville, Oakland erased a 24-9 deficit by scoring 29 unanswered points at home to beat Buffalo, and the Seahawks routed the defending NFC champion Carolina Panthers in Seattle on Sunday night.

Week #13 by the numbers:
4 players entered Week #13
1 eliminated
3 advance to Week #14

Charity Football Pool – Week #12 Update

WEEK #12 UPDATE

Coming out of the Thanksgiving weekend games there’s once again no movement to report in the pool. The weekend was lean on upsets as only 4 point spread dogs won outright (San Diego, Tampa Bay, Kansas City, and Green Bay), and none of our players had action on those games.

In Week #12 two players advanced, as usual, by picking AGAINST the hapless Browns, who are now 0-12 for the season after losing 27-13 to the New York Giants. The Dolphins kept the hopes of 1 player alive as they held on for a 31-24 win over San Francisco, recording their 6th straight win in the process. Finally, one player advanced when the Saints rang up 555 total net yards in a 49-21 steamrolling of the Los Angeles Rams.

Week #12 by the numbers:
4 players entered Week #12
0 eliminated
4 advance to Week #13

Charity Football Pool – Week #11 Update

WEEK #11 UPDATE

The upset of the week for Week #11 took place in Kansas City where the Tampa Bay Buccaneers hit 4 field goals en route to a tough 19-17 win over the home town Chiefs, halting KC’s 5-game winning streak.

There was, however, no movement in the pool this week, as all 4 players successfully advanced on the strength of victories by heavy favorites despite having to sweat it out a bit in a couple of those games. Two players advanced when the New York Giants came back from a 10-point first half deficit to beat the Bears at the Meadowlands; 1 moved to Week #12 when the Lions held off an upset bid by the Jaguars in Detroit; and 1 also stayed alive when Tom Brady returned to his old Northern California stomping grounds with his Patriots to stamp out the 49ers.

Week #11 by the numbers:
4 players entered Week #11
0 eliminated
4 advance to Week #12

Just a reminder that there are 3 games on Thanksgiving Day. If you would like to make a pick on any of those games, you’ll just need to get those picks in before they kickoff. All other games will adhere to the usual 1 PM E.T. Sunday deadline.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
