The highlight of Week #8 took place in New Orleans where the Saints’ Drew Brees and the Giants’ Eli Manning combined for 13 touchdown passes in a game that went back and forth for over 59 minutes, and left the teams knotted 49-49 with just seconds remaining in regulation. But an improbable punt return by the Saints, compounded by a facemask penalty against the Giants, put New Orleans’ kicker Kai Forbath in position to hit a 50-yard game winning field goal as time expired. The Saints victory did save one of our players from elimination this week. Minnesota’s victory at Chicago for the first time since 2007, and Carolina’s rain-soaked overtime win over Indianapolis on Monday night also represented victories for our pool players.
The wild game of the weekend that did cost a player their spot in the pool took place in Atlanta where the Buccaneers, fresh off a 31-30 loss in Washington that saw them blow a 24-0 lead to the Redskins, visited the Falcons. The Bucs appeared to be heading down that road again as they squandered a late 17-point lead, and allowed Atlanta to get the game into overtime. But Jameis Winston crab-legged the Bucs offense to a field goal on their opening possession in OT, and when the D held Atlanta scoreless on their possession the Bucs had some measure of vindication.
