Charity Football Pool – Week #8 Update

Week #8 Update

The biggest upset of the week took place in Chicago, in what turned out to be a Halloween night of horrors for the previously 5-1 Minnesota Vikings. In their 20-10 win, the Monsters of the Midway (though not exactly the ’85 Bears), who came into the game at 1-6, shocked, awed, and overwhelmed Minnesota’s porous offensive line all night to completely shut down the run game, rattle Sam Bradford, and keep the NFC North leaders out of the end zone until it was much too late.

Surprisingly, that game eliminated only 1 player. Players used three other games to advance in Week #8. Two players went into the weekend stress free by taking Tennessee over Jacksonville on Thursday night. Two more advanced when Denver held on to avenge their earlier loss to San Diego. One player advanced when Dallas came back from a 10-point second half deficit, twice, to defeat Philadelphia 29-23 in overtime.

Week #8 by the numbers:
6 players entered Week #8
1 eliminated
5 advance to Week #9

Charity Football Pool – Week #6 Update

Week #6 Update

One of the bigger upsets of the season occurred in Week #6 when the previously 1-4 Dolphins throttled the previously 4-1, and AFC North leading Steelers, 30-15 in Miami.

Another upset that had an impact on our pool this week was an AFC West battle on Thursday night in San Diego. The Chargers, also previously 1-4, knocked off the previously 4-1, and defending Super Bowl Champion Denver Broncos 21-13.

Those two games, combined with the dreaded No Pick, were responsible for knocking 4 of our 13 remaining players out of the pool in Week #6.

Those who survived were split between winners Buffalo (5 players), New England, and Tennessee (2 players each).

Week #6 by the numbers:
13 players entered Week #6
4 eliminated
9 advance to Week #7

Charity Football Pool – Week #5 Update

Week #5 Update

In Week #5 Philadelphia was knocked from the ranks of the unbeaten by Detroit thanks to a late turnover and some very shoddy officiating. Also, the defending NFC champion Carolina Panthers, playing without injured star QB Cam Newton, fell to 1-4 on the season after losing at home to division rival Tampa Bay on a field goal as time expired.

Fortunately for our pool players, neither of these results had any impact, as all of our players stayed clean for the week.

6 players advanced when Tom Brady successfully returned from his 4-game suspension to lead the Pats over the over-matched Cleveland Browns; 4 players relied on the Steelers to win at home yet again, which they did, easily dispatching the New York Jets; while Hillary and Donald exchanged barbs Sunday night the Packers helped 2 players advance by handing the New York Giants their 3rd consecutive loss; and finally 1 player advanced thanks to the Colts home victory over the Chicago Bears.

Week #5 by the numbers:
13 players entered Week #5
0 eliminated
13 advance to Week #6

Charity Football Pool – First Quarter Update

First Quarter Update

Despite the absence of catastrophic upsets in the league through the first quarter of the season, the number of players in our 2nd Annual Austin Hardware Charity Football Pool has already been cut by down by two-thirds.

Here are just a few weekly highlights:

In Week #1 eleven players were eliminated. The biggest chunk came on opening night of the season when several players seemed to believe that Trevor Siemian would not be a good enough replacement for the retired Peyton Manning to prevent the visiting Carolina Panthers from avenging their Super Bowl loss to the Broncos. But Siemian was indeed good enough, and Denver’s D picked up where it left off in February, knocking off the Panthers and eliminating 4 of our players from the get-go.

In Week #2 nine more players were eliminated, four of whom when Tennessee spoiled Detroit’s home opener with a 16-15 comeback victory over Lions. This result was surprising in that it just about mirrored a comeback victory the Lions pulled off just a week earlier at Indianapolis.

Things settled down a bit in Week #3, which saw only 4 total players eliminated. The surprise of the week took place in Philadelphia where the Eagles dominated the Pittsburgh Steelers, 34-3, in a battle of cross-state rivals.

Week #4 also saw a total of 4 players eliminated thanks to losses by Arizona, Baltimore, and Indianapolis.

First Quarter of the Season by the numbers:
41 players entered our pool
28 eliminated through 4 weeks
13 advance to Week #5
